You’ve been trying to conceive for a while. Your doctor said he won’t give you metformin or anything until you lose some weight. But it’s just so hard! You’ve been going to the gym but the weight just isn’t shifting. You feel like you’ll never be able to have a baby. What are you supposed to do?

The obvious answer here seems to be restrictive dieting and intensive workouts most days of the week. But is that really the key to weight loss?

From a holistic health perspective, weight loss is not just about calories in vs calories out. There are many factors that can affect whether you lose weight (or gain weight). Sleep, stress levels, and doing the right kinds of exercises are all things that can affect whether you can lose weight effectively. Additionally, restrictive eating could mean you’re not getting enough essential nutrients which your body needs to nourish your eggs. Good quality eggs = improved fertility outcomes!

Many of my clients who come to me for weight loss are often:

  • highly stressed (and let’s face it, trying to conceive is a stressful time!)
  • or have inadequate/interrupted sleep patterns
  • yet, they’re going to the gym 4 times per week, but they’re not losing weight

Addressing these factors can help you lose weight and also help improve hormone regulation, ovulation, and your chances of conceiving naturally.

Gym workouts may also be problematic as high intensity workouts can raise cortisol. Cortisol is often known as the “stress hormone” – it becomes raised when we are mentally or physically stressed. When cortisol levels are raised, the cortisol steals resources that are needed to create our sex hormones. This creates hormone imbalances, which can prevent you from ovulating regularly – which is not helpful if you’re trying to conceive.

Exercises that are helpful for your fertility include gentle exercises. Think yoga, walking, swimming, pilates or tai chi. I especially love yoga for improving fertility because there are specific poses that improve circulation to your reproductive organs which can help your fertility.
