Tarot tip: understand the framework
Whenever I teach tarot, I go back to this basic framework. This is my “shortcut” to remembering what the tarot cards mean, rather than trying to memorize all 78 cards in the tarot deck!
SUITS:
You can divide the Minor Arcana tarot cards into four suits. Understanding the meaning of each suit can give you a clue to what the Minor Arcana cards are all about.
Pentacles = physical possessions, money, health, work
Cups = emotions, relationships, intuition, love
Wands = passions, spirituality, creativity
Swords = intellect, thoughts, ideas & communication
So once you know the meaning of the suit, you combine that with the energy of the number on the card!
So we know the Five of Pentacles is all about physical possessions etc as it’s a Pentacles card. We can interpret the Five as “change”, so the Five of Pentacles can mean a change of possessions or financial situation.
You can find keywords for all the number & court cards in the tarot tips poster on this page 🙂
What about the Major Arcana? You can also use your knowledge of numerology with the Major Arcana too! For example, 1 = beginnings, and card 1 in the Major Arcana is The Magician. The Magician is definitely about beginnings, especially with learning how to use your gifts to manifest your thoughts into reality.
The thing to remember about tarot cards is that tarot is a tool for your intuition. Use this framework to get you started, then let your intuition take over the reading…
Tarot tip: trust your intuition
When you’re reading the tarot cards, if you get a gut feeling about what a card is meaning, just say it! Don’t stress about trying to remember the traditional meaning – the cards are just here to prompt your intuition. Your intuition is often accurate, so trust it!
Say what you see. Whether that’s what you see on the card, or what your third eye is seeing, just say it.

Tarot tip: symbolism
Tarot cards often contain lots of symbolism in the imagery. Consider the symbolism of things like:
- Colours
- Symbols
- Objects
- Plants
- Animals
- Numbers
Use these visual clues to help you tune into what the card is suggesting.
Tarot tip: pick a deck that vibes with you
It’s worthwhile shopping around to find a deck that vibes with you! If you don’t vibe with the traditional Rider-Waite deck, don’t think your career as a tarot reader is doomed. Look around for a deck that feels good for you!
Different decks can add more layers of meaning. My absolute favourite deck is the Herbal Tarot Deck by Michael Tierra. This was the first deck I bought, and it’s still my go-to deck. Each card has a different herb, so for me as a herbalist & gardener I really resonate with the additional meanings that each herb brings to this deck.
Tarot tip: try different spreads
I feel like most people learn the Celtic Cross spread when they first learn tarot, but it can be an awkward spread to use at times, especially when you’re just beginning to read tarot! There are endless tarot spreads you could use, or you can make your own spreads. Try new spreads to gain more practice reading your cards in different ways.
Recently I downloaded some gorgeous printables from The Wandering Moon Tarot Co. Inside the Wandering Journal are some creative tarot spreads including a 7 card spread, one for each chakra. As I used this spread the other day, I thought about how this would be an amazing spread to use when reading for others!
If you feel overwhelmed by using larger card spreads, go back to this basics. 3-card spreads are less complicated but still provide lots of insights!
Some of my favourite 3-card spreads are:
- Past | Present | Future
- Mind | Body | Soul
- Me | Relationship | Partner
- Situation | Obstacle | Outcome
Tarot tip: create a sacred reading space
Turn the TV off.
Light a candle.
Burn some incense.
Meditate.
When you take the time to “set the stage” it will help you feel more in touch with your intuition & the tarot cards. Remove distractions, create a sacred space, and set the vibe.
