I have been an entrepreneur for 13 years now and as you can imagine, I’ve encountered quite a few lessons in business over that time. There are certainly a few things I wish I knew early on. With the steep learning curve of being a new business owner, I’m here to shed some light on the ways you can set yourself up for success…

Harness a success mindset

It is critical to dive into your business with a success mindset. Don’t allow yourself to have that little thought in the back of your head saying you are going to fail. If you are going into it with that mindset, you’re setting yourself up to not fully succeed.

Maybe you need a license or certain qualifications to practice. Or it might be setting yourself up with a business banking account and registering to pay taxes on this new form of income. Don’t put off the little things you need to do to get started because you’re scared to fail.

Despite not needing to register to pay certain taxes until I was making a specific level of income in Australia, from the beginning I’ve always registered to pay them – believing my business would grow quickly and trusting in myself as an entrepreneur.

Regardless of what the task may be when starting or growing your business, approach it with the most positive and abundance oriented perspective possible.

You’re allowed to change your business

It can feel overwhelming to pick something to do forever. But the reality is, you don’t have to! I encourage you to jump in and give it a try. If it’s not working for you, it’s okay to move on and try something new. It’s not failure or quitting if you are following your passion, which can shift over time.

I started my first business 13 years ago making cloth nappies and believed it was going to be what I would do for the rest of my life. After my 1st child grew out of nappies and I had a gap without any small children in my life, I lost my passion for making them. But I continued to run my business because I felt an expectation for me to continue on. Eventually, I gave myself permission to close that up and move into my next business following my passion as a vegan food blogger.

Since then, I’ve come to learn that following my passion right now is perfectly fine. I decided to write my book Moon Manifesting because it felt right at that moment in time, and I knew I could always do something else after, if my passions shifted away from moon manifesting.

Consistency is key

Whatever you do – opening a shop at the same time each day, holding offerings, creating an online space to connect – show up and be consistent!

When you’re not showing up and being consistent, it will cause delays that reflect in your sales, and customer attraction and retention. Whether you are starting, growing, or maintaining a business, consistency is what really drives you forward in entrepreneurship.

When you create daily habits for success and continue chipping away at your goals day by day, you’re going to make progress. Apply the same concept to your business. Show up to get traction and start achieving your goals of making more money, selling more products, and getting more clients.

Prioritize what is truly adding value

It is all too easy to get caught up in tasks that aren’t really important to your overall business. This results in wasted time doing things that aren’t going to have an impact and therefore are not worthwhile.

In my first business I was obsessed with SEO.

I would spend hours EVERY DAY working on my search engine optimization. Honestly, I was never able to hit my goal of being on the first page of Google, yet I wasted so much time putting effort into something that didn’t really matter in the grand scheme of my business.

Wasting time on social media is a huge issue for many, myself included. I find a lot of entrepreneurs can relate to this one! We can get sucked into thinking these little things are so detrimentally important for our businesses that other goals and priorities begin to take a back seat.

Ask yourself – what would happen if you didn’t do those things? How would it affect how you are making money? How big of an impact is it really making?

You’re in a business to make money doing what you love. If you’re doing things that truly aren’t contributing to making sales and the work is no longer what you are passionate about, consider if you really need to be doing that task anymore.
