Aligning your yoga with the moon

When I’m designing a yoga class (or even just doing my own yoga flow in my personal practice), I’ll also start off my checking in with the moon.

What phase is the moon in? This will determine whether I do a vinyasa, yin, or other type of flow. I talk more about this in Episode 089.

What zodiac sign is the moon in? This will determine what body part or chakra I’ll focus on – and this is what I’ll be sharing about today.

What are the chakras?

The chakras are our energy centres, located along the spine from the tailbone all the way to the crown of your head. Chakra means “spinning wheel of light”, so you can visualize a spinning wheel of light where your chakras are.

  • Root chakra = located at the base of the spine
  • Sacral chakra = located under the navel
  • Solar plexus chakra = located in the centre of the belly, under the ribs
  • Heart chakra = located in the centre of the chest
  • Throat chakra = located at the throat
  • Third eye chakra = located in the centre of the forehead between the brows
  • Crown chakra = located at the top of your head

When I did my Yoga Teacher Training a few years ago, my mind was BLOWN ? when I learnt more about the chakras! Our chakras are connected to our emotions AND our physical body.

If a chakra is out of balance, you’ll often experience the associated emotional and/or physical symptoms.

An example here is the solar plexus chakra. When this chakra is out of balance, you may experience anger as well as digestive issues.

So when you work on healing the chakras, you’re also working on healing your emotions and your physical body too. Powerful stuff!

How to use essential oils in your yoga practice

A quick word about how to use essential oils for chakra healing in your yoga practice!

When I’m doing yoga, I’ll do one (or more) of the following:

  • Place a few drops of essential oil in the diffuser
  • Place a drop on the palm of my hands, rub together, then cup my face with my hands and take a few deep inhales
  • Dilute a drop of essential oil into a carrier oil (ie coconut oil) to rub onto your hands or body (perhaps on the chakra you’re working on!)

I use & recommend Young Living essential oils for the purest quality. You can find out more about essential oils here.
